HHW Disposal

Helpful Tips:

  1. Always read labels carefully before buying and using hazardous products.  Be aware of their uses and dangers.  If directions are unclear, contact manufacturer before using.
  2. Buy Alternative household products which are not toxic.  Look for "non-toxic" on the label.
  3. Keep unused portions in their original containers with labels intact and readable.   Knowing the contents could be a lifesaver in case of accidental poisoning.
  4. Store hazardous materials in a place inaccessible to children and pets.
  5. Reduce your waste and save money by purchasing only material you need and will use.
  6. Avoid mixing different products.  That can cause explosive or poisonous chemical reactions
  7. Always use hazardous products in well ventilated areas.  Wear protective gloves when warranted.  Many hazardous products have dangerous fumes that can burn your skin or irritate your eyes, nose and throat.
  8. Look up the phone number of the poison control center and place it near or on the phone in case of actual or suspected poisoning.
  9. Bring material in original, sealed containers.
  10. Do not mix products in one container.
  11. To prevent leakage or breakage, pack separately in absorbent material or triple bag.
  12. Bring rags to clean up any spills, and dispose of rags at the collection site.

Richard Baroch, Recycling Program Manager recommends that residents form a "buddy system" among neighbors, friends, and family. Residents could take turns bringing the materials. "Why not ask a neighbor who already is attending to bring your materials, and next time you can return the favor? This not only helps you, but it puts fewer vehicles in lines at the collection site."
