What is Somerset County doing to help dispose of household hazardous waste?

The Board of Chosen Freeholders, through the Division of Solid Waste Management, has provided funding for periodic household hazardous waste drop-off programs. These collection days are run at no cost to county residents.

Drop-off days and locations are announced in the local media and listed on this Web page below. There is a limit to the amount of material that can be brought. You may bring up to 80 lbs. Of dry material or 10 gallons of liquid.

During 2008, Somerset County will hold six (6) Household Hazardous Waste Collection Days:

  • April 5, 2008 8am - 2pm
    Bernards Township Public Works Garage
    277 South Maple Avenue, Basking Ridge

Directions To Bernards Township Public Works Facility:  Take Rt. 287 North or South to Exit 30 (N. Maple/Basking Ridge). Exit and continue traveling on No. Maple Ave. for 2 miles No. Maple Ave. turns into So. Maple Ave. The Bernards Public Works Garage is on right hand side.

Take Rt. 78 East or West to Exit 33, From 78 East get off exit ramp, Turn Left at the light from 78 West get off exit ramp, Turn Right at the light, go to Fourth light turn right onto Lyons Road. Continue on Lyons Road for 2 miles, go through traffic light pass Lyons mall on left. Go under railroad tracks turn right onto Crossroad & follow to the end. At stop sign make left onto So. Maple Ave. Bernards Public Works Garage is on the Left-hand side. 

  • May 10, 2008 9am - 2pm
    Warren Township Public Works Garage
    1 Bardy Road, Warren

Directions To The Warren Township Public Works Garage: Take Rt. 22 East or West to Warrenville Road . Take Warrenville Road (Rt. 651) North until it intersects with Mountain Blvd. Make a right on to Mountain Blvd. (Rt. 527). Follow Mountain Blvd. until it intersects with Bardy Road making a right on to Bardy Road . The Warren Township Public Works Garage is located behind the Warren Township Municipal Complex.

  • June 14, 2008 9am - 2pm 
    South County Public Works Garage
    410 Roycefield Road , Hillsborough

Directions To The South County Public Works Garage:

·         From The South - Intersection Of Rt. 514 ( Amwell Rd ) And Route 206:  Take Rt. 206 North, passing K-Mart (on your left). Continue for approximately 3.5 miles until you come to a light at the intersection of Rt 206 and Dukes Parkway West . Make a left onto Dukes Parkway West . Continue for approximately 2 miles to Roycefield Road . Make a left onto Roycefield Road . Follow Roycefield Road for approximately 1 mile. The South County Public Works Garage will be on your left. Signs will be posted.  

·         From the North - Take Rt. 206 South from the Somerville Circle for approximately 4 miles. At the intersection of Rt. 206 & Dukes Parkway West, make a right. Follow Dukes Parkway West for approximately 2 miles until it intersects with Roycefield Road . Make a left onto Roycefield Road . Follow Roycefield Road for approximately 1 mile. The South County Public Works Garage will be on your left. Signs will be posted.

  • August 2, 2008 9am - 2pm
    Franklin Township Sewerage Authority
    70 Commerce Drive , Somerset

Directions To The Franklin Township Sewerage Authority:  

·         From Somerville , Bridgewater and Northern Somerset County : Take 287 South to Easton Avenue (exit 10); Take Easton Avenue towards New Brunswick for 5 Lights to Jug Handle onto JFK Boulevard . After 3rd light, JFK Blvd. turns into Clyde Road . Make the 3rd light, right turn onto Commerce Drive , Franklin Township Sewerage Authority on right side.   

·         From Millstone and Western Somerset County : Take Amwell Road (Rt. 514) toward Franklin Township from Millstone, go 5 lights (including light at Millstone). At intersection of Amwell road and JFK Blvd. and turn right onto Clyde Road . Make the 3rd Right turn onto Commerce Drive , Franklin Township Sewerage Authority on right side.  

  • September 13, 2008 9am - 2pm 
    Branchburg Public Works Garage
    34 Kenbury Road , Branchburg

Directions To The Branchburg Township Public Works Garage:  Take Rt. 287 West to Rt. 202 South. Go approx. 4 miles on Route 202 South to Old York Road (make left). Go past Old York Road School and make the first left onto Kenbury Road . Look for sings for the Public Works Yard.

From Raritan, Somerville and Manville: Take Old York Road (CR 567) to Kenbury Road in Branchburg Township . Make a right hand turn and go about ½ mile. The DPW facility is on the left. Look for signs.

  • October 25, 2008 9am - 2pm 
    South County Public Works Garage

What Materials Will be Accepted?

All hazardous waste generated from households, along with banned or outdated pesticides. Wastes will only be accepted if they are in their original labeled containers.

The following materials may be dropped off:

  • Drain cleaners
  • Disinfectants
  • Photographic chemicals
  • Toilet cleaners
  • Oven cleaners
  • Rug & upholstery cleaners
  • Floor & furniture polish
  • Mothballs
  • Bleach cleaners
  • Pool chemicals
  • Ammonia-based cleaners
  • Abrasive cleaners of powders
  • Auto products: brake fluids, wet-cell car batteries, antifreeze, transmission fluids
  • Used motor oil: (2 gallon maximum will only be accepted in a clear plastic milk or waterjug) (Also accepting used oil filters)
  • Oil-based paint*
  • Fluorescent tubes & Compact Fluorescent Bulbs
  • Mercury switches
  • Propane Tanks

*Latex or water-based paints may be air-dried or diluted with water, and the cans may then be thrown in the regular trash.

Please do not bring -

  • Unknowns or unidentified material
  • Explosives
  • Gas cylinders
  • Infectious waste
  • 2, 4, 5-TP (Silvex)
  • Dioxins
  • PCB’s
  • Pentachlorophenol

Who Can participate?

Only Somerset County homeowners and farmers. Hazardous waste from commercial enterprises and businesses will not be accepted.

How should hazardous wastes be handled?

Hazardous wastes must be handled in ways that prevent them from reaching dangerous concentrations in the environment. The following are some suggestions to reduce the amount of hazardous waste:

  • Read the label before you buy a product to make sure it will do what you want.
  • Do not buy more than you need, to prevent having to dispose of surpluses.
CAUTION

Explosives or Highly Reactive Materials may be dangerous. If you have these types of materials, call first for safety instructions. DO NOT bring these materials without prior authorization! These dangerous items include, but are not limited to, picric acid, isopropyl ether, calcium carbide, perchloric acid and benzoyl peroxide.

Somerset County Consumer Electronics Program

At the first Saturday of the month drop-off Somerset County will accept and recycle Consumer Electronics. This program is open to all Somerset County residents only (proof of residency required).

  • When: The First Saturday of the Month Drop-off
  • Location: Somerset County Recycling Center located at 40 Polhemus Lane in Bridgewater
  • Time: 8AM to 2PM

Got a spare tire you want to lose?  Oil, Oil Filters, Antifreeze?

In conjunction with the First Saturday of the Month Drop-off, Somerset County will accept and recycle tires, oil, oil filters and antifreeze at the Somerset County Recycling Center located at 40 Polhemus Lane in Bridgewater from 8:00 a.m. – Noon.

  • Open to Somerset County residents only (proof of residency required).
  • Residents may bring a maximum of eight (8) tires at one time.
  • Tires accepted from RESIDENTS ONLY (no businesses).
  • Residents must see attendant before unloading their vehicle.
  • Automobile and light truck tires only.
  • NO OVERSIZED TIRES.
